this year sees abba’s the album turn 40, and usm are pleased to announce that we’ll be releasing a selection of products to celebrate the anniversary. abba: the album is the fifth studio album by the swedish pop group abba. it was originally released in scandinavia on 12 december 1977 through polar music and was released in conjunction with abba: the movie, with several of the songs featured in the film. the album contained two uk number-one singles, -take a chance on me- and -the name of the game-, as well as european hits -eagle- and -thank you for the music-. the album includes three songs from abba’s 1977 tour mini-musical the girl with the golden hair. these songs are -thank you for the music-, -i wonder (departure)- and -i’m a marionette-. altogether the album contained just nine songs—the least of any abba album, but were longer in length than previous albums (opening track -eagle- runs to nearly six minutes). abba: the album reached no. 1 in many territories. in the uk it debuted at the top and remained there for seven weeks, ending up as the third biggest selling album of the year (behind the movie soundtrack lps of saturday night fever and grease). in the us it became their highest charting album, where during 1978 abba undertook a big promotional campaign.

nice price deal !!! nach einem weiteren erfolg mit take a chance on me widmete sich die gruppe im märz 1978 den aufnahmen für ihr nächstes album. begonnen wurde mit den beiden liedern as good as new. im april wurden die beiden nächsten songs lovers (live a little longer) und lovelight auf band gebracht. im mai wurde das stück summer night city aufgenommen. im august wurden die sessions mit the king has lost his crown fortgesetzt. es folgten die beiden songs angeleyes und if it wasn’t for the nights im oktober und chiquitita im dezember. im januar und februar 1979 wurden die aufnahmen mit does your mother know, voulez-vous, i have a dream und kisses of fire abgeschlossen.

die aufnahmen für das album begannen mit knowing me, knowing you und that s me. nach einer pause im april wurden im mai money, money, money und happy hawaii auf band gebracht. im juni folgte when i kissed the teacher, im juli dum dum diddle und tiger und im august my love, my life, why did it have to be me? und das für das album namensgebende instrumentalstück arrival. im september wurden lediglich einige overdubs zu einigen titeln hinzugefügt, bevor das album am 11. oktober 1976 veröffentlicht wurde.

with the visitors, abba took several steps away from the lighter pop music they had recorded previously and the album is often regarded as a more complex and mature effort. the opening track, the visitors , with its ominous synthesizer sounds and the distinctive lead vocal by frida, announced a change in musical style

the album also features a song co-written by agnetha fältskog. although she had composed much of her swedish solo output, the song disillusion , for which she wrote the music, is the only song released on an abba album to feature a songwriting contribution from her.

nachdem die gruppe 1973 von ihrem sommerurlaub zurückgekehrt war, widmeten sich benny andersson und björn ulvaeus der komposition neuer lieder. der erste song, der in diesen sessions aufgenommen wurde, war dance (while the music still goes on), welcher sehr von den aufnahmen von phil spector inspiriert war. es folgten im oktober die aufnahmen für my mama said, honey honey, what about livingstone und suzy-hang-around. im november wurde lediglich der king kong song aufgenommen, der später von vielen fans als „der albernste song, den die band jemals produziert hat“ bezeichnet wurde.

* international smark* (translation: international taste) opens with an 8bit techno tinged waltz before quickly floating into dreamy synth chords and staccato guitar licks.
featuring an infectious cross dialect narrative (swedish/finish) provided by international songstress tigerlight, the track comes across like a meeting between metro area and abba - two acts payfone cite as big inspirations.
* people* on the flip explores an electro-disco aesthetic bouncing along into the night with a heavily pitch affected vocal and angular bassline that drives an incessant groove

after the very well-received work >in g< borngräber & strüver have not been resting on their laurels but made >reise< (journey). they extended the concept of >21th century electro motoric kraut< on the new album >urlaub< and added their preference for disco music. like a friend of the label said: >reise – sounds like a composition for the 20th birthday of carl craigs planet e<. borngräber & strüver have consistently worked on developing their minimalist compositions without taking into consideration conventions. the nearly 17-minute >reise< that starts extremely held back, grows into a groovy trip you can hardly escape. >berlin tribal music< has a radically minimalist approach and a surprising break like a portal to a parallel dimension. the last part of the album >dancing queen< has nothing to do with abba. the piece is a missing link between electronic h-pop and groovy club sounds.
